About Sarah

Sarah brings her decades of experience at all levels of nonprofit organizational development to bear in her own firm, Clear Compass Legal, where she seeks to serve clients as they navigate transitional and growth points, such as applying for tax exempt status, hiring its first employee, terminating an employee, board development, policy review, or becoming a fiscal sponsor for another organization.

Sarah started her nonprofit career serving as a Volunteer Coordinator at a Colorado nonprofit and exploring the wild and unprotected areas managed by the Bureau of Land Management, advocating for their protection. That passion and dedication to fight for improved public lands management eventually led her further West, to Eugene, Oregon, and the Environmental Law program at the University of Oregon School of Law.

While studying at the UO, Sarah helped found the Public Interest Public Service program (PIPS), which connects law students with opportunities to serve the Eugene community through service and cultivates an ethos of community engagement in Oregon's future lawyers. She also served on the board of the student group Land Air Water, which organizes the annual Public Interest Environmental Law Conference (PIELC) and as Articles Editor on the Journal of Environmental Law and Litigation (JELL).

After graduating with Certificates in Environmental and Natural Resources Law and Public Interest Law, Sarah spent many years as a nonprofit Staff Attorney advocating for improved management of public lands and serving on the board of directors for a variety of nonprofit organization.

Sarah eventually came full circle to her farm girl roots and served as Executive Director of a small nonprofit in Salem, Oregon advocating on behalf of small and mid-sized farms in Oregon. After years spent digging deep into nonprofit management and staff and program development, Sarah became the Managing Attorney at the Center for Nonprofit Law, where she managed the small business and explored her keen interest in all things employment law and nonprofit management related.

In her off-hours, Sarah spends as much time outside as possible, either in the garden, in the woods, or on the water. When not out exploring Oregon, Sarah enjoys preserving the bounty that grows in the Willamette Valley, listening to live music, and riding her bicycle around town.
